PV has lost its typical village looks
The master plan...the public is not allowed to see if there is one.
It is part of a FONATUR, federal development plan for Riveria Nayarit, to make PV less picturesque and not too attractive to visitors so that they will go north.
The Malecon reminds meof Cancun, Ixtapa and many other places I´ve visited in the world..no character.
The muni government made a deal with parking lots and few wish to pay 20 pesos per hour to park... So muni gov PRI croneys are complaining...so now parking removed from streets, forced to park in parking lot...not only customers, but store owner and employees with vehicles..at 160-200pesos for parking per day it is not cost effective...

            We, residents of Puerto Vallarta, express our concern and discontent by the destruction and loss of identitity that our historical downtown area is experiencing. Currently, and the specific reason for this request, is the new public work on Calle Iturbide, the destruction of the paved road and the sidewalks CONVERTING IT to a small square. We believe that this breaks the geometric urban plan, a traditional characteristic of our town which has been promoted all over the world for more than 60 years by both the residents of Puerto Vallarta and everyone who has been a beneficiary of tourism activities. We, the residents of Puerto Vallarta who are not in agreement with this destruction, demostrate to you today, February 16^th at 13.00 Hours., in representation of the portion of the community in disagreement with this act and affected by these public works arbitrarily undertaken  by your Administration. We request to be heard, that our rights be respected and that our requests be met.
             This Request contains the community's most sincere demands. We most respectfully demand to be taken into account both regarding the actual as well as future modifications and proposals as the law provides.
                                                  RESIDENTS OF PUERTO VALLARTA REQUEST:
1.- To stop the public work  now in progress on Calle Iturbide and Avenida México and return them to their original, traditional condition.
2.- To preserve the original infrastructure of Calle Iturbide, since it has undergone a change which fully breaks the harmonic and geometric congruity, urban enviroment and urban image which has identified us for more than 60 years and produces a loss of identity to our typical, traditional town.
3.- To respect and regain downtown the city's parking spaces, since they have been systematically been eliminated to the detriment of all city inhabitants.
4.- To REINSTATE automobile circulation on Malecón street (Paseo Díaz Ordaz), as it was agreed to by you in response to the Resident's Request delivered to you on May 19^th 2011, after the demostration against the Malecon destruction and widening. Your signature on the document proves your commitment. Unfortunately, until now is an unfulfilled commitment.
5.- To respect the paved road along the entirety of Avenida Mexico with its traditional width, as it has always been, and to preserve the parking spaces on both sides of the street.
6.- To commit yourself and your Administration to maintain the image of the typical, traditional town, liked by so many tourists, because tourism business has been decreasing year after year thanks to the city's last administrations' insistence on changing Puerto Vallarta's identity, thereby affecting the entire Vallartan economy.
7.- To abandon the supply of false information to the community on behalf of the Administration you represent using unrealistic and misleading expressions, like "Renewal of Puerto Vallarta's Malecon", when in fact it was a demolition and widening towards the beach. "Rescue of Historical Downtown", really consisting of public works destined to lose the identity of the typical, traditional Downtown. "Museum in the site of the City Hall", in fact a commercial mall.

FRIENDS OF THE MARKET NEWSLETTER MARCH 2012

That confusing, complex, contradictory, contentious, costly, and possibly wonderful Central Waterfront and Seawall planning, design and construction project is heating up this month. The Pike Place Market, up on the bluff above Elliott Bay, is on top of the issues, players, and plans. It has quick and smart leaders in Ben Franz-Knight and Peter Steinbrueck. They have asked for help from all Market groups, merchants, residents, and organizations. Last week they met with the Board of Friends of the Market ( in the just about refinished Goodwin Library) to alert our group to the decision points and action opportunities that FoM can help with.

The PC-1 North lot, now the Desimone Parking Lot, and the former location of the Municipal Market Building (burned in 1964 and demolished in 1968), which is directly over the BNSF railroad track entrance and tunnel is the focus of current concern. This space and the elevation descent from the Market to tidelines has already received several iterations of plans for its design and use, mostly by the firm of world renowned ( and out of town ) landscape designer James Corner. Their most recent set of architectural computer aided images of possible connections built between the Market and the Waterfront under whelm all who have seen them. The Corner plans are not Market friendly. It is time to organize citizen comments and passion to put some Seattle ideas in the connection of the Market to the Waterfront before the Viaduct comes down in 2016 - in fact it is time to act now.

An important opportunity to learn more of the design decisions ahead and voice the concerns of FoM is at a Special Meeting and Presentation by Central Waterfront Planners from the city to the Pike Place Market Historical Commission on Wednesday, March 14th, 2012 at 3:30 PM in the PDA Conference Room at the Market. Marshall Foster, City Planning Director, DPO and Steve Pearce, Waterfront Seattle Project Manager, SDOT will brief the Commission on "design plans for new connections between the waterfront and the Market, including a land bridge (Overlook Fold) and a new road from Alaskan Way to Elliott and Western, "Elliott-Western Connector".

Additionally, Waterfront Seattle has been holding public meetings to obtain ideas and comments from the public at Town Hall ( Eighth and Seneca, Downtown) 5:30 to 7:00 PM on Monday March 5th and Wednesday March 14th. You can attend these meetings and make the Friends' presence known. Go to WaterfrontSeattle.org for more information on the planning to connect the Market to the water.

The Newsletter will keep you informed with Special Notices on Waterfront Planning. Ed Singler is preparing a letter to all parties stating the specific concerns of FoM, which we will share with you.

Finally, last month's Newsletter introduced Passages erroneously. This edition of Passages is about Washington history.

January   2011                                                            POST ALLEY PASSAGES
                                        AN ANTHOLOGY OF STORIES
Christmas brought Passages a beautiful and engrossing history of Washington viewed through its printed record of diaries, maps, documents, and graphics.
It is New Land , North of the Columbia: Historic documents that tell the story of Washington State from Territory to Today. Sasquatch Books, Seattle , 2011 by local oral historian and teacher, Lorraine McConaghy. The book mines the archives of university and city, county, state and federal historical collections, archives and libraries. McConaghy remarks,"…those creations reflect who we were and who we are." Her ample citations will lead readers to the sources available to every one of you who want to know more of how people lived their lives from the earliest settlers to the present.
She calls her book "a powerful anthology of stories" along a path to the present. It starts when Washington was Indian ground in 1846. The British and American dispute over Oregon Country is settled at the 49^th parallel. "Two years afterwards, Oregon Territory was organized, including present-day Washington , Oregon , Idaho , and parts of Montana and Wyoming . Then, in 1853, Washington settlers successfully concluded their campaign to separate Washington Territory – the new land north of the Columbia – from Oregon Territory", and here the stories in this book begin.
Most entries fill one page, a few spread across both opened pages. Each has a crisp paragraph explaining the context and meaning of the documents illustrated. For example the First King County Marriage Certificate of 1853 is pictured with black ink still clear on the aged brown paper. McConaghy writes that King County was formed before Washington Territory existed and was originally named for Vice President Rufus King to curry favor back in " Washington City " (now D.C.). The marriage certificate is a roster of Seattle pioneers; David Denny married Louisa Boren, with "Doc" Maynard, Justice of the Peace and Henry Yesler, Clerk. Arthur and Mary Denny were witnesses.
McConaghy's paragraphs of explication on each entry always add context and understanding to the pictured images. Some images command more attention and study than the text can provide. An entry on Asahel Curtis's climb of Mount Shuksan in 1906 is illustrated with "excerpts from the second issue of the very first volume of The Mountaineer, a magazine that is still published today." This commands a close reading by armchair mountaineers.
Five entries of formal wedding and family photos taken in professional studios present visual records of clothing and personal grooming styles over time, but also the mix of diverse people and ethnicity that contributed to Washington 's growth over the 170 years since its Territorial beginning.
The procession of stories is chronological and the one entry referring to the Pike Place Market is an election brochure for the Initiative to Keep the Market. Another issue documented here was women's suffrage. It runs through several stories beginning when it was put into law by the Territorial legislature in 1883, but struck down by the Supreme Court three years later. Suffrage for women was approved with the 1889 state constitution, but never realized. Finally, in 1910, a ballot measure to amend the Constitution made Washington the fifth (all in the West) to approve the vote for women. The first appearance of a typewritten document in this collection is a 1911 personal letter from May A. Hutton of Spokane to a New York suffragette leader.
Some ledgers, lists, letters, and other handwritten records prove fascinating under a hand held magnifying glass. The first page of the first patient ledger for the King County Poor Farm, run by the Sisters of Providence, covers the 16 months prior to September of 1878. The ledger notes, name, sex, age, profession, place of birth, religion and date of admittance. Of the 40 patients enrolled 14 died before the page was turned. On another page here is a listing of the property of Carrie E. Clark of Thurston County , who died intestate. The author speculates on her life based on the possessions she left.
Cooper & Levy, outfitters, bought a Seattle Times ad listing the "Supplies for one man for one year in the Klondike ". Each miner spent about $200 for an outfit, and 100,000 or so people passed through Seattle for Alaska . "The Klondike Gold Rush bankrolled Seattle 's growth into the major city on Puget Sound ". About this time the Grand View Dining Hall in Bellingham printed a menu that gives us an insight into the sturdy cuisine of a frontier town. Thirty cents bought a "sirloin steak with bread and butter, potatoes and coffee". Desserts seemed limited to fresh fruit with cream, in season, 10 cents.
Mountain climbing was noted when Asahel Curtis topped Mt. Shuksan in 1906. This story concludes with a two page spread on Mt. Rainier 's climber's summit record with two pages of comments at the top of The Mountain. This mountain reference, near the end of the book, is followed by single pages about Microsoft, the WTO " Battle in Seattle ", and the rejected $30. License Tab initiative, the state's surging wine industry, the Monorail, the 2004 state and federal election, and, finally, an orthorectified image of Washington State from 500 miles in space.
The book touches on the political and moral movements of the late 1800's: the IWW, Socialism, Populism, Communal living, Temperance, and Women's Suffrage, WWI, Tacoma's fight to rename Mt. Rainier, expositions and world fairs, the Grand Coulee Dam, Fluoridation, Japanese internment, WWII ration books, the Floating Bridge, the Manhattan Project, and much, much more.
McConaghy urges the reader to find his or her own online digitized documents from home computers and the local library. This book is just a sampling Washington history preserved by the conservatories of paper that let us revisit the real and engaging past.

    Any interest in reading my ArtBasel Miami artfairs synopsis? We had a GREAT time, as per usual, so much art (hundreds of thousands of works?) it makes your eyeballs (not to mention FEET) hurt. I didn't want to just automatically send to my mailing lists, since it's in 2 e-mails, & big files (4 or 5 MB, not huge).
    I finally got around to writing as much down as I could remember for my Visual arts list here in Seattle, but if any of the rest of you have any interest, I'll happily forward.
    By way of explanation, These are a cluster (maybe 20?) artfairs (with gallerists & collectors from from all over the planet) in Miami & Miami Beach every December for 4-6 days. It's another world of insanely priced fabulous art, gorgeous people, non-stop parties, celebrities, sun & sand. I'm in hog heaven, & try to go every year.

Marriage is sharing
The old man placed an order for one hamburger, French fries and a drink.
He unwrapped the plain hamburger and carefully cut it in half, placing one half in front of his wife .
He then carefully counted out the French fries, dividing them into two piles and neatly placed one pile in front of his wife.
He took a sip of the drink, his wife took a sip and then set the cup down between them. As he began to eat his few bites of hamburger, the people around them were looking over and whispering.
Obviously they were thinking, 'That poor old couple - all they can afford is one meal for the two of them.'
As the man began to eat his fries a young man came to the table and politely offered to buy another meal for the old couple. The old man said, they were just fine - they were used to sharing everything.
People closer to the table noticed the little old lady hadn't eaten a bite. She
sat there watching her husband eat and occasionally taking turns sipping the drink..
Again, the young man came over and begged them to let him buy another meal for them. This time the old woman said 'No, thank you, we are used to sharing everything.'
Finally, as the old man finished and was wiping his face neatly with the napkin, the young man again came over to the little old lady who had yet to eat a single bite of food and asked 'What is it you are waiting for?'
She answered

'THE TEETH.'

This installation invites the viewer to consider all the abundant beauty she observes in her garden.

Ramiz Barquet Memorial Exhibit at Galeria Pacifico On March 7th

Ramiz Barquet has been called the artistic patriarch of Puerto Vallarta, in large part because of the eight monumental sculptures he created to donate to this city. He was born in Mexico City of Lebanese immigrant parents on March 7^th, 1920, although he died in Vallarta at the age of 90 on July 4^th, 2010, after suffering a heart attack. On the occasion of what would have been his 92^nd birthday this March 7^th, his widow Nelly Barquet and Galeria Pacifico will be mounting a memorial exhibit featuring his last creations and many of his perennial favorites, to include small commemorative editions of his famous publicly displayed sculptures. These include the famous "Nostalgia," on the Malecon since 1984 near the intersection with Pipila Street; the "Fisherman," by the public market at the end of the northbound bridge over the Cuale River; San Pascual Bailon in front of Vitea Restaurant on the extension of the Malecon, "Shark in Spiral" at Los Muertos Beach next to Restaurant El Dorado; "Family of Four," in front of the Peter Gray Museum at the University of the Coast; "A Boy, A Book, A Future," in front of the Los Mangos Library and "The Seated Family of Four," in front of Vallarta`s Office of Family Affairs. Ramiz also has major public sculptures in Beirut, Lebanon; Mexico City; and the City of Veracruz.. He was the last protégé of the Italian master, Agosto Bozanno, and worked with him on various monumental sculptures throughout Mexico after the master's immigration to Mexico. His sculptures are in collections throughout the world, including with such notable collectors as Vidal Sassoon and the late owner of the Los Angeles Times newspaper, Otis Chandler.

The cocktail inauguration will take place during the 6:00-10:00 PM Wednesday Art Walk at Galeria Pacifico`s second floor location at 174 Aldama Street, just up from Nelly Barquet`s landmark restaurant on the Malecon, Los Palomas. The exhibit will remain on display through March 20^th, and more information may be obtained by calling the gallery at (322) 222 1982 or by emailing GaleriaPacifico@gmail.com.

Botello, Descanso en Paz

Our beloved friend and gifted artist, Jesus Botello left this earthly plane last night. His passing was peaceful after suffering complications of renal failure.

He is now at Funeraria Celis ( San Salvador 253 ) and there will be a viewing from 6pm to 7pm this evening, Saturday, Feb 25.

A Mass will be celebrated at the parrish of Our Lady of Guadalupe on Tuesday, Feb. 28 at Noon.

Rest in peace Jesus and may your further journey be blissful. Thank you for all the wonderful sculptures, paintings and beauty you leave with us. We will always remember your kindness and genius, your sense of humor and love.

Back from Paris and New York with treasures to share with you. The Marche aux Puces is always a great source but it takes a keen eye to pluck the gems in the raw amid all that glitters there. Found objects that have been incorporated into Pariscope jewelry abound.

We are always on the lookout for products that are organic, well-designed and have a story behind them. While teaching a class for Coyote Central at the studio, one of the moms showed us her line of soaps and bath salts and we thought you would like them too. The fragrances are intoxicatingly seductive and get this, made locally. Meke soaps and bath salts.

Now that we're settled into the studio again, Elena has been at the bench transforming blobs of silver and gold into one-of-a-kind signature rings and earrings. Nothing says "an individualist" like the rings from Pariscope Studios.

You know Elena as an artist, but did you know that she builds and manages our blog and website as well? She's been revamping our blog www.pariscopestudios.wordpress.com and it's fresher, fun to navigate and will have the capabilities to shop some of our items on line. What more could you ask for? We encourage you to view the many amazing photos taken from various trips this year (France, Greece, NYC, Austin TX) and see what inspires us. We hope they inspire you as well.

Many of you know how to find us, but for those new to our studio, we are at the NW Work Lofts, where Denny intersects with Western at the base of Queen Anne and edge of Bell Town. The exhibition opens Saturday, February 25, from 5-8 PM, and continues through April 21, 2012.
Artist, educator, scholar, curator, writer, administrator, editor, filmmaker and collector, Samella Lewis has played a crucial role in the development in most every aspect of African American Art.
In Los Angeles, Lewis is known as the founder of the Museum of African American Art where she served a chief curator from the museum's inception in 1976 through 1986.  Lewis also founded The Gallery at Scripps College where she was a professor (1969 – 1984). Scripps recently honored Lewis, a Professor Emerita, with the creation of the Samella Lewis Contemporary Art Collection.
In 1996, Lewis explained her professorial and curatorial philosophy, "Black women are nurturers.  We nurture our families by seriously listening to and seriously considering what they tell us.   We also have an obligation to see that valuing and collecting contemporary art is a significant aspect of nurturing.  We must familiarize ourselves with our historical and contemporary art in order to understand and know ourselves."
This exhibition will feature selected artworks from the artist's collection along with works created by the artist in hopes of illustrating this philosophy in eloquent detail.
The gallery is pleased to present the exhibition as a part of the Getty's Pacific Standard Time: Art in L.A. 1945-1980 initiative. The exhibition is accompanied by a full-color catalogue with text by Suzanne Muchnic.

Roy Bruno: Crescent Loons Exhibition
at the Pratt Hallway Gallery through March 31

Visit the Pratt Hallway Gallery for Crescent Loons, artist Roy Bruno's exhibit of sculpted glass birds. Several years after completing a career in science and mathematics, Bruno discovered glassblowing and embraced it with a passion. Taking his first gather at age 66, he continues to push the technical edge of the craft, experimenting with hand-carved molds, smokeless gunpowder, hot-forging molten glass and other potentially ingenious ideas. 2012 is likely the year in which greener and leaner Earthen Home projects will be more apparent around the Southwest. After three years of reconstitution and reappraisal, builders are carefully laying out plans. We see adobe and rammed earth projects starting up, in contrast to the "regular" housing market, still mired in gumbo. Green is King, but now, the green must also include how much stays in the pocketbook. It's a good time to nail down what that Adobe is going to cost you. If you're a contractor, learning Adobe and Rammed Earth builds your portfolio. If you're an owner-coordinator, know-how about code, drafting, materials, tools and logistics is vital to success.
Have you ever wanted to bake bread in your own adobe horno? Check out the June 2/3 class. Also, if Rammed earth has eluded you, consider the March 31/April 1 and/or May 18/19/20 classes. We will have R.E. contractors on hand to critique your rough plan ideas. Bring some of your dirt to test! How long will it take to mix and cast 30 adobes?

Can you teach color sense?
Two Parsons professors explain why their students paint their own skin tone and how anyone can become a colorist

Can you teach an instinct for color? Some colorists think not; those who say you can compare the process to something slyer, a delicate sussing-out of an affinity we all draw upon daily. I spoke to Thomas Bosket, coordinator of graphic design and general studios and assistant professor, and Langdon Graves, both instructors in color theory at Parsons, the New School for Design, to get answers (and more tantalizing questions). The resulting outpouring of ideas, opinion and inspiration can't be contained in a single post — look for Part 2 of this conversation soon.

You teach color theory, a subject some designers and artists believe is impossible to teach (i.e., brilliant colorists are born, not made). How do you deal with students who harbor this belief, but still have to take your classes?
Thomas Bosket: I have taught unteachable courses for 16 years and have never found a student to be unteachable. That is a myth based on teachers who want to feel like exclusive geniuses. "Genius" is not born; it's in all people but it needs to be tapped. That is done by reaching into the well of creativity, finding our own unexpected reaction or response to a need of society that is yet unmet.
If you take a "creativity" course there should be no rules, only guidelines. If you are following recipes, it is not creative. If you are facing some fears you are learning at a point somewhere near your edge.
Langdon Graves: Thankfully, I don't often encounter students with this attitude. I try to nip it in the bud on the first day of class by discussing the largely subjective nature of color, while also introducing the attempts made by theorists and artists to establish some kind of common protocol to study it more objectively.
Everyone is born a colorist, because everyone has been exposed to and has a unique reaction to color. In teaching it, I think my responsibility is to provide the tools and skills to guide that reaction.
I heard at Print's Color Conference about an unconventional color-theory exercise you use at Parsons, in which you get students to paint the colors in their own skin. Can you tell me more about that?
TB: This started as my exercise. I was trying to teach students to respect the specific matching of color. They could have cared less about my explanation, but I knew they cared about my reason for having them respond so specifically: Color is the most emotional element and to create a refined response we need to tap into our emotions (our psychological makeup) and that is a very dream-like arena, a very personal arena. So, instead of having them match any random color I thought, "Why not have them paint a very personal color!" and that was their skin. (This assignment has led to some amazing discussions about expectations and preconceived notions. Another longer discussion!)
LG: This is Thomas' wonderful exercise, which I also do in my classes because it's so much fun. The students are delighted to be able to paint directly onto their skin (acrylic, non-toxic) and I love to hear them get excited about how much violet or green they're having to add.
Because Parsons is so internationally diverse, this activity always prompts discussion of the differences in everyone's skin color, which is fascinating to be able to break down in terms of pigment. But creating the colors also reveals how similar the formula is for nearly everyone, and how subtle and important the nuances are. I like the symbolism this holds for celebrating cultural differences while appreciating what we have in common.
Can you each cite some examples of brilliant use of color in design, and a terrible use that was nonetheless widely lauded?
TB: Widely lauded? Or widely used? Hollywood movie posters with a basically monochrome color palette (one color with a range of black and white grays) it is EVERYWHERE! More brilliant uses of color would be seen on Mike Perry's design work, fashion by Balenciaga (particularly their Spring 2010 collection) or the designs of NandoCosta.
Excellence can come from the worst choices that are transformed, but the WORST is what is "factoried" out of most color education when the teacher pushes students to use "balanced designs, good harmonies" or any such crazy formulas you see in book after book after book on color! Teach a student to trust their responses to sensation, and you will see great color in design.

LG: I think Benetton reigns as one of the best brands for color because of how completely they use it. They are colorful in every sense: products, people, advertising, philosophy. They are always bright and bold and they never go out of style.
Ikea put out a cookbook called "Homemade Is Best" that is such a simple, visual treat and uses color to perfectly complement the natural hues of the food ingredients.

I love the wry yet delicious use of color in the work of artists/directors Lernert & Sander, particularly in their short films like Chocolate Bunny (2007).

Although she is a fine artist and not a designer, I think Jessica Stockholder is one of the most amazing contemporary colorists.

One of the worst uses of color I can think of, which gets overlooked as a work of design, is the Homeland Security Advisory System, better known as the "terror alert" level. According to the scale, red is the most severe while green indicates low to no risk of a terrorist attack; orange yellow and blue fall between them. I appreciate the benefits of tapping into our instinctual responses to color to help us in times of crisis, but I am skeptical of the helpfulness of the system, as well as the crisis. I also wonder when we might see blue or green make their debut; the alert level has never dipped below "elevated." A little bit of blue would go a long way.
